The New England Patriots made their latest coaching staff hire by reuniting with Josh McDaniels and appointing him as the offensive coordinator.

Patriots wideout Kendrick Bourne offered his initial reaction on social media, welcoming McDaniels back for a third time with open arms. However, Bourne shouldn’t be the only player in New England’s locker room thrilled by the addition of McDaniels to first-year head coach Mike Vrabel’s staff.

“No one should be happier from this news than Drake Maye,” Travis Thomas said on NESN’s “Boston Has Entered The Chat” podcast. “Of course Vrabel’s happy. Of course, McDaniels is happy. Of course, Robert Kraft, who’s familiar with McDaniels, is happy. Pats nation, we’re all happy. No one is as ecstatic as Drake Maye. Because, my God, he said everything right in his rookie year. I’ll give the kid credit. … Drake went out there, true QB1 fashion like a veteran in the game even though he’s a rook. Said all the right things. Did all the right things.”

Maye navigated the disaster that was Jerod Mayo’s one-and-done run as head coach of the Patriots. The 22-year-old patiently awaited the starter’s nod before he logged 12 starts and finished 225-of-338 for 2,276 yards, with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. In season hovered by a dark cloud in Foxborough, Maye’s ascendance offered hope for the team’s future, and perhaps with McDaniels back in town, 2025 will be an even greater leap for the organization as a whole.

McDaniels was a member of each of the franchise’s six Super Bowl runs, all under Bill Belichick’s illustrious run at the helm. Now, the 48-year-old will resettle on the sidelines with a new head coach, a new quarterback and a pressure-filled campaign in 2025.
