To my surprise, it appears that many Green Bay Packers fans thought that assistant head coach/special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia was going to be fired this offseason. Bisaccia has now signed an extension that will keep him in Green Bay for at least the next two seasons, which is pretty common in the NFL. Rarely do NFL head coaches or coordinators go into a season on an expiring contract, unless your owner is the Dallas Cowboys’ Jerry Jones.

Beyond just the Packers, historically, being a cheap organization on the coaching front, I want to dive into the job that Bisaccia has done in Green Bay and hear what you all think of his performance. Let’s go unit by unit.

Specialists

The best specialist the Packers have right now is punter Daniel Whelan, who is on a cheap deal for the team and was a steal of a signing out of the XFL in 2023. As far as I see it, Green Bay has its punter of the future, which is a positive point for Bisaccia.

Kicker is a different story. Because of the cap crunch for the “all-in” late-Aaron Rodgers era, the Packers had to look at the draft to address their post-Mason Crosby plans. Anders Carlson, clearly, didn’t work, but the two prospects in the 2023 draft who were expected to go at all — Jake Moody and Chad Ryland — were both selected in the top 112 picks. Between Rylan and Carlson, no kicker came off the board for another 95 selections. The Packers’ only other option at the time, considering their cap situation, was to just hit the undrafted free agent rookie market for 2023, had they not been able to select Carlson.

So I don’t really hold that against Bisaccia. I know everyone isn’t in the same boat. After farting around with Brayden Narveson for six weeks in 2024, the Packers pulled the trigger and signed Brandon McManus, who was available for cheap after recently closing a sexual assault case. On the field, this move has for the most part worked out for Green Bay, as both head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst have stated that they hope to re-sign McManus for the 2025 season.

I don’t know enough long snappers. I snapped in high school. I’ve taught high schoolers how to snap. I’m not consuming enough film to have an accurate gauge on how Matt Orzech is performing relative to the rest of the league. My guess is that it’s probably just below the NFL average, in terms of how often Whelan has to adjust to his snaps, but that’s hardly a reason to pay out a special teams coordinator and hire a new one.

Coverage Units

The coverage units are, without question, better under Bisaccia than recent Packers special teams coordinators. Yes, the weird trick punt return with a second returner against the [Chicago...
