Silver And Black Pride
There are seven new head coaches in the NFL in 2025 and two of them will meet in Week 11 when Pete Carroll and and Brian Schottenheimer’s teams face.
This a perfect time to look at how all seven teams are faring under their new leadership so far, presented in alphabetical order of the franchises:
Chicago Bears:
Ben Johnson was considered the top prize in this class and he is showing why. The Bears are 6-3 and tied for first place in the competitive NFC North. Yes, they’ve won a lot of close games, but why is that a bad thing? The rookie head coach has his team ready to make plays when needed. Plus, there has been growth by second-year quarterback Caleb Williams under Johnson and that was a big reason why he was hired. Johnson hasn’t been perfect, but it’s working.
Dallas Cowboys:
The Cowboys are 3-5-1, so it hasn’t been great. But Schottenheimer, an unpopular hire, has taken done well with the offense (he was the team’s offensive coordinator the past two years). Yes, the defense has been a mess but it wasn’t Schottenheimer’s call to trade star Micah Parsons just before the season. All in all, Schottenheimer isn’t doing all that badly.
Jacksonville Jaguars:
Liam Coen was considered a hot name and he’s off to a decent start, leading the Jaguars to 5-4. The job doesn’t look to big for Coen, 40, and he seems like he has this franchise pointed in the right direction.
Las Vegas Raiders:
The Raiders didn’t have a lot of competition for Carroll (he was one of many to interview with the Bears) and the Super Bowl-winning coach is struggling after taking a year off after leaving the Seattle Seahawks. The Raiders are 2-7 and look unorganized. The Carroll tenure has been shaky enough and there are rumblings he may join Antonio Pierce as a second straight coach t0 go one and done. Stunning, really.
New England Patriots:
Vrabel was highly-sought after and he is delivering right away for the team he was a standout linebacker for. The Patriots are a surprise 9-2 and Vrabel is a top NFL Coach of the Year candidate. The Raiders’ Week 1 win at New England seems like it was years ago.
New Orleans Saints:
The Saints are 2-8 and that seems about right. Kellen Moore wasn’t considered an overly inspiring hire and the New Orleans’ roster is depleted. He should get some time to build his program, but it may take a while.
New York Jets:
Aaron Glenn was considered a solid hire. The Jets started 0-7, but have won two straight games. Still, this is very much a rebuilding program. Glenn just has to make sure he doesn’t get in his own way and is given patience to build the franchise.
