Houston Texans’ Pro Bowler Doubtful to Return in 2025

Houston Texans’ Pro Bowler Doubtful to Return in 2025

Few teams have had a more challenging start to their season than the 1-3 Houston Texans. They’ve completely reshaped the offensive line, leading to second-round rookie Aireontae Ersery to be their starting left tackle after trading All-Pro Laremy Tunsil to the Washington Commanders.

Houston’s offensive line, which surprisingly ranks 11th in sacks allowed this season, has room for improvement. Yet, they’re not running the ball either, and part of the reason they’re ranking 20th in yards per rush is due to the absence of two-time Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon.

Mixon has been out for the entire season with a fairly inconspicuous injury to his foot and/or ankle. The team hasn’t really commented on Mixon’s injury thus far.

According to the Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan Alexander, Mixon is doubtful to play for the Texans at all this season.

Mixon hasn’t been at games, in practices, or even in the locker room this season. He’s still under contract, with a $9.4 million cap hit in 2025. Mixon also has a $10.5 million cap hit in 2025.

The last time we saw Mixon, he was seen with a boot, but that was in the summer. He later traveled to Florida to see a foot and ankle specialist, but that’s the last we’ve heard from him.

Mixon recorded 1,016 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns last season, earning his second Pro Bowl nod. Yet, not having him at all has thrown a wrench into their plans. Former Pro Bowler Nick Chubb leads the team with 188 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Fourth-round rookie Woody Marks ranks second on the Texans with 113 rushing yards and a touchdown. Had Mixon been healthy, odds are he’d be the clear leader in Houston’s backfield, but we may have to wait until 2026 to see him on the football field again.
