Even with the addition of RJ Harvey in the draft, bringing in a veteran like J.K. Dobbins would be beneficial for the Denver Broncos in 2025.
Good morning, Broncos Country.
Yesterday, multiple reports surfaced that free agent running back J.K. Dobbins was heading to the Mile High City to meet with coaches. Whether or not he signs with the Denver Broncos remains to be seen. In my opinion, it would be a wise decision to make.
The Broncos upgraded their running back stable via the 2025 NFL Draft by selecting University of Central Florida standout RJ Harvey in the second round. Harvey was extremely productive in college and exceled as a runner on zone-based principles. He should hit the ground running on those play calls during his rookie campaign and be a big boon for the Broncos’ rushing attack this coming season.
As things stand right now, the top three backs in the Broncos’ rotation are Harvey, Audric Estime, and Jaleel McLaughlin. Outside of them, the team has a handful of practice squad caliber players. However, none possess any significant experience on third downs, and are all still a work in progress when it comes to pass protection.
While Dobbins’ career has been marred by injuries, he did experience somewhat of a revival last season. He was second in voting for the league’s Comeback Player of the Year Award after rushing for 905 yards on 195 carries and scoring 9 touchdowns. He added 153 receiving yards on 32 catches and secured his first 1,000 all-purpose yard season of his career.
The Broncos’ offense last year was middle-of-the-pack in most rushing metrics and hasn’t had a 100-yard rusher since Latavius Murray in 2023. In order for their offense to improve, they will have to be much better running the ball on early downs compared to how they performed last season. I think Dobbins could help significantly in that respect.
Health and longevity are the big concerns with Dobbins. Nevertheless, signing him to a one-year deal to add a veteran presence to their backfield would be a smart decision. Adding him into the mix shouldn’t inhibit the vision the team has for their young core of backs. However, it does raise the overall floor of the position group and adds flexibility bringing in a player that has shown the ability to succeed in multiple facets when healthy.
What do you think, Broncos Country? Are you in or out on Dobbins in Denver? Sound off in the comments section and let me know.
