Horse Tracks: Being a Bills proxy fan is awful

Horse Tracks: Being a Bills proxy fan is awful

This poor fanbase can’t catch a break.

On Sunday night, I found myself, a proud citizen of Broncos Country, rooting again for the Buffalo Bills. As the Broncos descended into mediocrity and worse in the years following Super Bowl 50, the Bills were on the opposite trajectory. Since the Broncos weren’t in position to stop the Chiefs forward momentum toward multiple Super Bowls, the Bills have somehow, and unfortunately, become a team that I find myself most often rooting for so that a team I don’t like gets eliminated from the playoffs. I mean, someone has to stop the Chiefs, right?

An original AFL franchise, the Bills won pre-merger championships in 1964 and 1965. Since then the Buffalo has prided themselves on getting close enough to get fan hopes up only to clumsily drop those same hopes on the ground to be stomped on.

Between OJ being bright spot in their history, Scott Norwood shanking the game winner, or just decades of sub-par football, no wonder Bills Mafia are jumping through tables and doing things that could result in severe head trauma. Do you blame them?

I’m so tired of the Chiefs doing well. However, I’m more tired of watching the Bills throw up on themselves year after year when they are Broncos Country’s, if not the country’s, singular hope of avoiding another Taylor Swift-heavy Super Bowl. It’s not hyperbole when I say that the Bills let America down. This is the Super Bowl that nobody wanted and yet here we are.

My heart goes out to Bills fans. You probably deserve better than this. Probably.
