Jacksonville signed Smoot and WR Trenton Irwin, and waived WR David White Jr.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are bringing home a familiar face.

The team signed its former third-round pick, Dawaune Smoot, on Tuesday.

Jacksonville selected Smoot with the 68th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Illinois. He totalled 23.5 sacks and 133 tackles (27 for a loss) in seven seasons with the Jaguars before playing for the Buffalo Bills in 2024. His 23.5 sacks rank 10th in franchise history.

Smoot was the Jaguars’ 2023 nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. He and his wife continue to run the Elsie Academy, a bilingual early-learning center near the St. Johns Town Center in Jacksonville.

“It’s been in the works for a while,” Smoot told Marcel Robinson of Action News Jax. “I know I’m going to be adding key depth [at EDGE] that we definitely need, and doing what I can on the inside as well.”

The Jaguars also signed wide receiver Trenton Irwin, who caught 46 passes for 601 yards and 5 touchdowns in six seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, and waived wide receiver David White Jr., who played on Jacksonville’s practice squad.
