The New England Patriots’ depth will be tested following injuries to rookie offensive linemen Jared Wilson and Will Campbell.
Wilson (ankle) and Campbell (knee) were both carted to the locker room amid the club’s victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, with the former missing nearly the entire game and ultimately being replaced by Ben Brown, while the latter was absent for the majority of the second half and replaced by Vederian Lowe.
Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel provided some positive updates on Monday — with both rookies seemingly avoiding worst-case scenario.
“He won’t be out there this week. It’s going to be a couple weeks,” Vrabel said of Campbell, per team-provided video. “We’ll have to make a decision here on the roster — to see how long that will be — and go from there. It’s nothing that’s going to, hopefully, put him out for the entire season.”
“It’s too soon to tell (whether he’ll miss significant time),” Vrabel said of Wilson. “We’ll see how the week of practice goes or see how the rehab goes — see how he responds there.”
It’s nice to know neither is immediately being ruled out for the season, but the expectation is that both will be out of the lineup for several weeks — which will bring about some significant change.
The Patriots’ starting offensive line has looked like this for all but one game this season:
LT: Will Campbell
LG: Jared Wilson
C: Garrett Bradbury
RG: Mike Onwenu
RT: Morgan Moses
It’ll probably look more like this moving forward, :
LT: Vederian Lowe
LG: Ben Brown
C: Garrett Bradbury
RG: Mike Onwenu
RT: Morgan Moses
Lowe and Brown are names familiar to this fanbase, but not for the right reasons. Lowe had some truly horrific stretches during his stint as the starting left tackle last season, finishing with a PFF grade of 54.0. Brown was better, but had one hell of a time living up to the expectations set by David Andrews — ultimately finishing with a PFF grade of 52.8.
Marcus Bryant is an option on the outside, but its doubtful the club feels comfortable putting that much responsibility on a seventh-round rookie with just 19 offensive snaps under his belt in 2025. Caedan Wallace is the only other offensive lineman on the active roster, though he hasn’t been active for a single game this season.
Andrew Rupcich, Sebastian Gutierrez and Brenden Jaimes are options on the practice squad, with the latter having 46 games of experience under his belt from his four-season stint with the Los Angeles Chargers and the former having made multiple appearances under Vrabel for the Tennessee Titans.
It’ll be difficult to tread water without two of the most impactful players on the entire roster, but there doesn’t seem to be a lack of bodies who are familiar with the system and able to step up if needed over the coming weeks/months.
