The Philadelphia Eagles instantly became the best short-yardage team in all of football when they instituted the “tush push” in the 2022 season. Jason Kelce and Landon Dickerson’s ability to win up front, Jalen Hurts’ incredibly strong legs, and a push from behind the play made their version of the quarterback sneak unstoppable.

There have been rumblings for a while that not everyone around the NFL is a fan of the play. But, Green Bay Packers President Mark Murphy put his neck out there and came out strongly against it.

The Eagles have converted at well over 80% of their quarterback sneak opportunities, well above the league average, since they instituted the tush push. Part of the success if the design of the play. But, arguably the bigger part is that they have the right personnel to run it. Even with Jason Kelce retiring, they haven’t lost much at center as Cam Jurgens has come in and been a great replacement. Dickerson is arguably the best guard in the NFL, and Hurts is designed perfectly for the play. Pretty much no one else in the league has the combination of those things to make the play so successful.

Mark Murphy wants the play banned, and does not like the play at all, to say the least. Here’s CBS Sports with more.

And once again, there are calls for the play, also known as the “Brotherly Shove,” to be banned. This time around, it’s coming from an NFC team who lost to the Eagles in the playoffs. Packers president Mark Murphy, who is set to retire after the 2025 season, did a Q&A session on the team’s website and was quite clear on his stance: He wants the “Tush Push” banned.

“I am not a fan of this play. There is no skill involved and it is almost an automatic first down on plays of a yard or less. The series of plays with the Commanders jumping offsides in the NFC Championship game to try to stop the play was ridiculous,” Murphy wrote in reply to a fan’s question about his thoughts on the play. “The referee even threatened to give the Eagles an automatic touchdown if the Commanders did not stop it. I would like to see the league prohibit pushing or aiding the runner [QB] on this play. There used to be a rule prohibiting this, but it is no longer enforced, because I believe it was thought to be too hard for the officials to see.

“The play is bad for the game, and we should go back to prohibiting the push of the runner. This would bring back the traditional QB sneak. That worked pretty well for Bart Starr and the Packers in the Ice Bowl.”

The Eagles were successful multiple times using the tush push against Green Bay in both Week 1 and in the NFC Wild Card Round in January.
