Many would agree that the Green Bay Packers have one of the NFL’s best head coaches in Matt LaFleur. Yet, he has just one year left on his contract and is coming off back-to-back playoff appearances without a postseason win.
Packers team president Ed Policy prefers not to have his coaches enter a season on an expiring contract. In other words, the Packers are expected to either part ways with coach LaFleur or reach a contract extension with him in the next day or two. The two sides are planning to meet on Monday.
Yet, the decision may have already been made.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the “Packers now are expected to try to work out a deal in the coming days to keep head coach Matt LaFleur in Green Bay, per sources.”
With a 76-40-1 record across seven seasons, LaFleur is as proven as they come in the NFL. Sure, he has yet to win a Super Bowl, but many teams (Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, and Las Vegas Raiders) would love to have the type of success LaFleur has enjoyed in Green Bay.
Yet, a 3-6 record in the playoffs has some wondering if it’s time to make a change in Green Bay. Apparently, the head honchos making the decisions don’t agree. Considering LaFleur would immediately become one of the very best coaching candidates available, the Packers would be wise to get their coach locked up for at least a few more seasons.
