A promising Green Bay Packers season started and ended with a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. They could not beat the Super Bowl Champions in two tries on two different continents this year.
Whether it’s because of those losses, or just because they don’t like it, the Green Bay Packers are taking aim at the tush push. A new report by The Athletic’s Dianna Russini claims that the Packers submitted a rule to be voted on by the 32 teams to outlaw Philadelphia’s ultra-effective short-yardage play.
The Eagles were up over 80% conversion rate once again this year on tush pushes, despite losing center Jason Kelce to retirement following the 2023 NFL season. Jalen Hurts is the perfect quarterback to run the play, as he has incredible lower body strength and a low center of gravity. And, having one of the best offensive lines in football helps, too.
But, it wasn’t that long ago that pushing the ballcarrier forward was illegal, and you could argue that the tush push isn’t really in the spirit of the game. And, theoretically, it could cause more injuries in the scrum compared to a normal play.
That’s what the Green Bay Packers think. After team president Mark Murphy spoke out against the tush push earlier this month, the Green Bay Packers have proposed the play be banned.
The Green Bay Packers are the team that submitted a proposal to the NFL’s competition committee to ban the tush push, per sources.

The proposal will need 3/4th of the teams to support it to become a rule. That means the proposal can only lose one vote, and surely the Eagles are one vote they will lose.
It’s yet to be seen what banning the play would actually entail. Would it be pushing a ballcarrier forward anywhere on the field that would be banned? Would it be only banning pushing a ballcarrier forward on quarterback sneaks that would be outlawed? They could go a lot of different ways with a crackdown on the play.
Even if the play is banned, there’s no reason the Eagles won’t continue to be a great short-yardage team. They have a great offensive line, and a backfield duo of Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts that are both hard to stop in short-yardage. But, it’s likely that their conversion rate would decline slightly.
