The Green Bay Packers’ receiver room will have a new look when the 2025 NFL season kicks off, with the addition of first-round wideout Matthew Golden. The group of defensive backs will also have a unique feel too.

One of the players who ended last season as a receiver will begin next season as a cornerback with the Packers instead.

Specifically, the Packers coaches have decided to convert Bo Melton to cornerback this summer. The 5-foot-11, 189-pound cornerback was selected in the seventh round by the Packers in the 2022 NFL Draft, 229th overall. His brother, Max, is also a cornerback, but he was drafted in the second round by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2024 NFL Draft.

As for Bo, he just turned 26 in May but after appearing in 22 games across his first two NFL seasons, Melton will apparently end his receiver career with 24 receptions for 309 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Now he’ll try to join a cornerback group that just let go of Jaire Alexander, which opens up more space for Melton to make an impact. Considering how deep the Packers’ group of pass-catchers is, it makes sense for them to try thinning the herd by converting some of the talent to another area of need, and good on Melton for being open to a position switch in an effort to salvage his career.

Even if Melton doesn’t receive a ton of snaps on defense, he’ll presumably get a good shot at earning playing time on special teams, where he’s played 390 snaps across the past two seasons.
