The Green Bay Packers are trying out one of their veteran wide receivers at cornerback following the surprise release of All-Pro Jaire Alexander.
After considering all their options, the Packers released Jaire Alexander on Monday. The move opens up $17.1 million in cap space for 2025 and $17.5 million for 2026, according to Spotrac.
Alexander has been one of the league’s elite cornerbacks since his first Pro Bowl season in 2020, but staying on the field after that was a problem. He played just 14 games over the 2023 and 2024 seasons and missed all but four games in 2021.
Per Andy Herman of the “Pack-A-Day” podcast and Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, the Packers tried out veteran wide receiver Bo Melton at cornerback during Tuesday’s minicamp session. You can see clips of Melton in action below:
The Packers solution at cornerback is… Bo Melton?!?! He’s out working with the CB group.

A seventh-round pick by the Packers in 2022, Melton has appeared in 22 games for Matt LaFleur’s group, catching 24 passes for 309 yards and one touchdown.
Obviously, it’s way too early to get excited about the idea of Melton making the switch to corner. Replacing an All-Pro corner like Jaire Alexander is easier said than done, but Green Bay has nothing to lose here in seeing if Melton can become a two-way player like Travis Hunter.
In seven seasons with the Packers, Jaire Alexander recorded 12 interceptions, 70 pass breakups and three forced fumbles. He earned Pro Bowl and Second-team All-Pro nods in 2020 and 2022 and helped the Packers to NFC Championship Game appearances in 2019 and 2020.
Durability is an issue for Alexander, but he’s been a top-five cornerback when healthy. And at just 28 years of age, there’s plenty of good football left in him.
There should be no shortage of teams interested in the longtime Packer, especially Super Bowl contenders with questions at corner like the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, Los Angeles Chargers and Cincinnati Bengals.
