Expectations were low but the execution, overall, works for the Browns new helmet

The Cleveland Browns started training camp on Wednesday, but that was not the biggest story that happened. After teasing it for quite some time, the Browns unveiled another alternate helmet to add to their arsenal. The reactions? A bit of a mixed bag.

My take? The helmets aren’t as bad as some people claim them to be.

Do I understand what the team was trying to do with the helmets? Yes, to a degree. Going with an all-brown look will have various opinions (some of those opinions are NSFW) and going with an all brown look will leave you open for criticism with the occasional joke sprinkled in. If the helmet were brown, with the number on the side with orange lettering around the helmet, it would look much better.

Negativity was persistent:

There was some excitement including from some connected to the team:

As far as promoting the helmet, I have some mixed feelings about it. Usually, whenever a team teases a helmet/uniform reveal, it’s usually straightforward with a date to follow it up. Leading up to the reveal, DudeWipes (which is a sponsor of the team) teased the reveal.

Later in the day, Browns mascot Brownie the Elf went on the Pat McAfee Show to tease the helmet.

I understand what the team was trying to do in terms of trying to get people excited about the team in some capacity, but some, if not most, fans don’t care about things like that; they only care if the team is good.

Is it harsh for fans to think that? Yes, but all of that goes away if you win.

Overall, the helmets aren’t bad, and if I were to give them a grade, it would be C. Not great, but I’ve seen worse.
