With the ball on the 41-yard line in plus territory, the spot looked a few yards out of range for 49ers placekicker Eddy Piñeiro. Piñeiro entered with a career long of 56 yards. The attempt was 59 yards. Shanahan gave him a chance, and Piñeiro delivered.

But there were really two reasons that mattered. First, Shanahan was aggressive, incisive, and played to his team’s limited strengths. Second, and most crucially, McCorkle was slinging that shit.
