49ers Notes: More RB woes, O-Line ‘not good enough’

“Guerendo joins Trent Williams as confirmed absences for this week. Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that Williams’ season is likely over. Guerendo, meanwhile, missed almost all of training camp with a hamstring injury, a recurring problem for him in his young career.”

49ers’ decisions with injured players have backfired during late-season flop (paywall)

“It’s notable that Greenlaw beckoned to the sideline and took himself out. After the game, he said he made the decision because he wanted to “protect myself a little bit.” And Greenlaw learned something about protecting himself last season when he took pain-killing shots before playing in a 31-17 loss to the Bengals in which he had an ankle injury and a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder.

The shots didn’t conceal that Greenlaw wasn’t close to healthy. He struggled to get up after tackles and received his worst single-game grade from Pro Football Focus since 2020.

“I thought maybe if I got the shots, I’d feel better,” Greenlaw said last year to the Chronicle. “And it didn’t feel the same. There’s no excuses. Once you get out on that field, you’ve got to go. It’s experience. Lesson learned. If you can’t go, you can’t go. My mindset — I’m always going to do whatever I can do to help the team. But I definitely didn’t help the team.”

In the aftermath, Shanahan said he also had learned a lesson about Greenlaw playing when he was compromised. A year later, however, it’s not clear how much that lesson stuck.”

49ers mailbag: Will Dre Greenlaw, Talanoa Hufanga be offseason priorities? (paywall)

“No. There will be some changes for sure. A lot of it will take care of itself as far as free agents heading off for greener pastures (see above). And I think it’s possible a pair of veterans — Samuel and Javon Hargrave — aren’t on the 2025 roster. But I’d characterize that as a medium, not major, roster overhaul.

I’ve likened the 2024 49ers to the 2023 Philadelphia Eagles, a team that lost in the Super Bowl the season prior and seemed to be missing something — energy, cohesion, a killer instinct, the elusive “it” — the following regular season. The Eagles regrouped in 2024 and are 12-2.”

Purdy ‘interested’ to see how Dolphins defend him after 2022 debut

“Honestly, it was like any other game my rookie year, in terms of backing up Jimmy and getting ready for it and being ready if my name was to be called,” Purdy said on Thursday.

Once Purdy replaced Garoppolo, the Dolphins tore up their defensive game plan and decided to dial up the pressure on Purdy.”
