Jordan Watkins’ summer challenge: Win over 49ers coach who doesn’t love rookie WRs (paywall)
“Watkins says he got an early — and accurate — heads up on Shanahan’s standards from relatives who are 49ers fans in his native Kentucky. Despite his impressive spring, he’s gotten plenty of film-room critiques from position coach Leonard Hankerson, who channels Shanahan.
“I’ve messed up on pass-game stuff, I’ve messed up on splits, I’ve messed up on run game,” Watkins said after Friday’s practice. “But that’s part of it. It’s part of being a rookie. Coach Hank is super, super hard on me. And I wouldn’t want it any other way. Because the NFL’s a tough, tough business.”
Jake Moody, Greg Joseph miss attempts as 49ers’ kicker battle continues on Day 3
“It should develop into a really good competition,” Boyer said. “I think they could have kicked a little better today.”
On Friday, Joseph missed two of his four field-goal attempts, while Moody was 3-for-4. His miss came from 50 yards.”
Dre Greenlaw’s replacement? First up is Dee Winters, the 49ers linebacker making a leap (paywall)
“The young 49ers linebacker positioned himself across from a tight end in a bunch formation. Winters then gambled on an out-breaking route. He came up empty — the tight end instead broke inside and hauled in a reception.
“The next time I see that formation,” Winters said Thursday, recalling a conversation with himself, “I’ll make a play.”
This the NFL, where the devil is in the tiniest details. And Winters was rewarded for recognizing that when he lined up early in the first practice of 49ers training camp Wednesday.”
The Good and Not So Good from 49ers Camp: Brock Purdy Out, CB Injured
“1. Through three practices, Mac Jones has completed 29 of 40 pass attempts (72.5 percent) with one interception. He’s having a good camp, even if today he was not so good.
2. After performing well in OTAs and minicamp, Jordan Watkins has cooled off in training camp and is struggling to get open and make catches.
3. Upton Stout gets more and more reps with the starters every day. He looks like he will be the primary nickelback as early as Week 1.”
49ers practice report: Renardo Green’s injury a reminder of CB depth concerns (paywall)
“Green entered camp appearing poised to build on his stellar debut season. Before he was injured Friday, Green had smell-his-breath coverage on back-to-back plays on Jennings and rookie wideout Jordan Watkins, allowing him to swat away passes from quarterback Mac Jones.”
Brant Boyer provides 49ers training camp kicker competition update
“San Francisco 49ers special teams coordinator Brant Boyer spoke to reporters on Friday, after the team’s third practice of training camp. Here is everything he had to say.”
Robert Saleh’s ‘commanding presence’ is what 49ers needed, Nick Bosa says (paywall)
“That background explains why Bosa is enthused that the 49ers...
