Schefter: 49ers’ Jones, Jennings expected to play vs. Bucs; Pearsall, Purdy updates
“Jones has been managing knee and oblique injuries, while Jennings has been recovering from ankle and rib issues. Their availability gives the 49ers’ offense a much-needed boost as they look to improve on their 4-1 record.”
49ers announce roster moves ahead of clash with Buccaneers
“Mustapha is back for his first game of the season after recovering from a knee injury he sustained in San Francisco’s final game of the 2024 season. The second-year player is the 49ers’ best safety, starting 12 games as a rookie. Mustapha had 72 tackles to go along with one interception and five passes defended. But he is best known for his physical style of play and will fit well into Robert Saleh’s defense.
Gipson is being elevated for the second consecutive week. Because this is a standard elevation, Gipson will return to the practice squad after the game. In his first appearance, against the Los Angeles Rams, he recovered a fumble, making an immediate impact. Gipson is in his sixth NFL season, and in the previous five, he started 19 games. In his career, Gipson has six forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and 11 sacks. He also has 21 QB hits.“
If 49ers’ QB Mac Jones is good to go vs. Bucs, can he finish what he starts? (paywall)
“Martinez, 25, is a 2023 undrafted free agent who was signed to the practice squad Aug. 27, three days after he was waived by the Jets. After playing at Nebraska and Kansas State, he has had some professional success despite not playing in an NFL regular-season game: He was MVP of the United Football League while playing with the Birmingham Stallions last year. Martinez said he jokingly terms the UFL “professional JuCo” and is grateful it was an option after he was waived by the Lions in 2023.
“The UFL gave me an opportunity to play 12 games, show what I can do and show that I’m an NFL guy,” Martinez said.
Shanahan said he got a “better feeling” for Martinez this past week when he took his first practice snaps with the first-team offense with Jones nursing his oblique injury. How much can Martinez handle if Jones can’t finish Sunday?
“You always try to keep it as simple as you can for guys in that situation,” Shanahan said. “Give him certain things — he tells you things he’s the most comfortable with — and then you try to isolate on that stuff. But when you get into a game, it’s about the situation. So you try to make it as easy as possible, but you do what you have to do based off how the game’s going.”
49ers’ John Lynch working to trade for a pass rusher to fill in for injured Nick Bosa (paywall)
“Lynch said on KNBR that he’s having “a lot of good and productive” trade conversations about pass rushers while acknowledging some of the roadblocks that exist.
