GM Candidate says Woody Johnson wasn’t pushing to get rid of Aaron Rodgers

Is another season with Rodgers under center for the Jets in the cards?

While the New York Jets eventually hired Darren Mougey as general manager, it wasn’t due to a lack of alternate options. Overall, the Jets interviewed a double digit number of general manager candidates in a process that bordered on comedic for how thorough it was.

Clearly, the ideas of those GMs are now rather irrelevant to the long term outlook of the Jets, but that doesn’t mean their interviews can tell us nothing. In fact, former Jets GM candidate Thomas Dimitroff recently gave an interview that provided some insight into where the Jets stood regarding quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

For those who don’t want to watch the video, the exchange was as follows:

Gelb: Was [team owner] Woody [Johnson] pushing that Aaron would not be back on the team in the interview process?

Dimitroff: No. Without getting into a lot of detail on that, no, not at all. I think he was really, I’m sure and knowing his approach to this, he really wanted to hear the interview people talk about what they would truly do. He didn’t want to influence in any way.

Most important in this is what he didn’t say, which is that team owner Woody Johnson has made a clear cut decision on what Rodgers’ fate with the Jets will be. Based on this, it appears that the Rodgers decision will lay with the new regime of head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey. Despite what anyone thinks of Rodgers, Johnson leaving this decision up to his football experts sure seems like a decision that is far more aligned with a competent franchise than the clown show that fans have grown accustomed to in recent years.
