Giants linebacker Abdul Carter may have gotten his “Welcome To The NFL” moment after being absolutely leveled by a block during a preseason showdown against the Jets. However, the rookie made the questionable decision to talk some trash after the clip made the rounds despite not really being in any position to do so.
Abdul Carter more than held his own during the three years he spent as a linebacker at Penn State, and the All-American who was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year for his play during his final season with the Nittany Lions in 2024 impressed to the point where the Giants selected him with the third overall pick in the most recent NFL Draft.
The team obviously thinks that the man who will be paid more than $45 million over the course of the next four seasons has what it takes to hang in the NFL.
With that said, he’s one of the many former college stars who will need to adjust to the level of talent you’ll encounter when you play in the best football league on the planet—as evidenced by the rude awakening he got in his second preseason game before doing some ill-advised damage control.
The Jets and the Giants faced off at MetLife Stadium on Saturday in a game where the latter earned a 31-12 victory over the franchise they share a home with.
However, Carter did walk away with an L thanks to what transpired on a play where he was tasked with rushing the quarterback but saw that plan derailed courtesy of Jets tight end Stone Smartt, who casually hit him with a block that sent the LB flying down onto the turf before continuing to run his route.
It was a bit of a rough look, but Carter decided to enter the spin zone with a tweet where he said the “play might be the only highlight of the Jets all season” while taking a victory lap concerning the results of a preseason game.

Carter is also firmly throwing a stone from inside a glass house here. Sure, the Jets have a reputation for being a hapless franchise and are looking to bounce back with a new coach and a new QB after going 5-12 last season, but the Giants were able to earn the right to draft him with the third pick in the first place by going 3-14.
The two teams won’t be facing off in the regular season this year, and while there’s technically a chance they could meet in the Super Bowl, something tells me that’s probably not going to be the case.
