Last week was a rough week for Giants fans. Eli misses out on the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the Eagles win Super Bowl LIX, and Saquon sets a new NFL record for total rushing yards for the full season including playoffs. The 2024 NFL season is officially over.
The NFL 2025 year begins in March. But, the draft evaluations have already begun with the college all-star games already played, the HBCU all-star game coming up this weekend, then the NFL Combine in late February. Clearly, the Giants are doing there homework on the top QBs in the draft, Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, and rising potential first rounder, Jaxson Dart. But before the draft, the Giants need to add to an empty quarterback roster. We are one month away from free agency which begins on March 10, 2025. Several veteran quarterbacks are available or rumored to becoming available. The Giants have a lot of competition for these veterans with many teams looking for QB help in a year where the draft prospects at QB are few. Let’s discuss some of the top veteran QBs (In order of my projected probability).
Matthew Stafford (via trade): Suddenly, there is a buzz about the Rams looking to shed some veterans. They have already announced that they are willing to trade WR Cooper Kupp. That brought some scrutiny and comments from players and in one case, QB Matt Stafford’s wife, Kelly, saying she’s looking forward to the next “adventure”. Stafford still has two years left on his current contract, yet the Rams want renegotiate Stafford’s deal. Stafford was one completed pass away from sending the Eagles home in the Divisional Round. The Rams have a history of sending veterans packing. The Rams sent Jared Goff to the Lions after Goff led the Rams to a Super Bowl. The move paid off for the Rams with Stafford as QB and taking the Rams to the Lombardi Trophy. As it turns out, the Giants and Rams were in discussions about Stafford before the 2024 trade deadline. Stafford can still sling the ball, hitting on 20 TDs with 8 interceptions and over 3,500 yards. Add that the Giants just hired Stafford’s brother-in-law, Chad Hall, as Assistant QB Coach. If there are any teeth to these rumors, the return package from the Giants could impact the Giants’ draft strategy and picks. Stafford is still good, but not worth first round picks.
Jameis Winston (Free Agent): Winston took over as the QB for the Cleveland Browns this past season after Deshaun Watson went down with an Achilles injury. He played in 12 games, threw for 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, a pretty pedestrian showing. Winston used his media status reporting for Fox during Super Bowl LIX Week to get plenty of screen time for his network as well as social media. It became clear he would be very willing to be the Giants QB of 2025. He asked Saquon for suggestions during media night, and Saquon obliged by suggesting...
