Good morning, New York Giants fans!
New York Giants: Jaxson Dart starts by Week 5. Giants brass has told everyone who will listen since the draft that Russell Wilson is the unquestioned starting quarterback and the plan is for first-round pick Jaxson Dart to develop behind the scenes. It sounds awfully familiar to 2019 when the plan was for Eli Manning to start with Daniel Jones on the bench … and then Jones took over after an 0-2 start. Manning was a franchise icon with far more equity than Wilson, who is on his fourth team in five years. If the Giants stumble against a killer early schedule, they won’t wait long to replace Wilson with Dart, who looked ready in the preseason.
Daboll wouldn’t say who won the position battles to start at right guard – where it appeared Greg Van Roten easily held off challenger Evan Neal – or cornerback. Cor’Dale Flott and Deonte Banks rarely were healthy at the same time after the first two weeks of training camp.
But Daboll’s biggest act of secrecy is trying to hide whether Jaxson Dart or Jameis Winston will be the No. 2 quarterback Sunday against the Commanders.
In fact, Daboll wouldn’t reveal the plan for splitting reps among quarterbacks in practice, beginning with Monday’s closed-to-media walkthrough.
Top Defensive Rookie of the Year candidates: 1. Abdul Carter, Edge, New York Giants. This year’s draft was light on top-tier defensive prospects — especially those who will generate the kind of numbers needed to win postseason awards — but Carter has the talent and opportunity to impress. The No. 3 draft pick has a good defensive line around him, including Dexter Lawrence II and Brian Burns. Those two will draw attention from offenses, which will give the speedy Carter a lot of one-on-one looks in passing situations. With 12 sacks last year in his first full season as a pass rusher at Penn State, the arrow is pointing up on what Carter can become as he gets more reps and coaching as an edge defender.
