New York Giants headlines for Friday
Good morning, New York Giants fans!
Russell Wilson once again opened the day with a flurry of touchdowns during 7-on-7 drills in the red zone, finding Darius Slayton and Wan'Dale Robinson for scores. Both wide receivers spoke recently about what it's like to catch passes from the 10-time Pro Bowler.
Cornerback Dru Phillips made perhaps the best non-takeaway defensive play, knocking a ball away on the sideline after a long scramble. Cornerback TJ Moore then prevented a touchdown with a pass deflection.
Up front, Abdul Carter, Elijah Chatman and Brian Burns found their way into the backfield a handful of times. In addition, Burns played volleyball on one pass and swatted it back the other way a good 10 yards.
This is what the New York Giants need to find: A way to get all three onto the field. Abdul Carter is primarily an outside linebacker in their defensive scheme, a position where they already have Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux. Considering all three are capable of recording double-digit sacks, it's a crowded position.
It's going to be incumbent on Bowen and Daboll to find a way to make it work. Burns and Thibodeaux already have double-digit-sack seasons on their NFL résumés. Carter is ubertalented and had 12 sacks last season in his first year playing the position at Penn State.
What would you do if you were Shane Bowen entering his second season as Giants' DC on the heels of a campaign that produced just three wins for a franchise in desperate need of a dramatic leap forward?
“Simple me, complex you - that would be my philosophy,” Jason McCourty said. “What I mean by that: when it looks complicated to the opposing offense, it has to be easy enough for us to understand our responsibilities. Let’s be as exotic in the secondary as we can. If I was Shane Bowen and I had the front I have this year, with what I’ve added on the back end, the goal should be to make the quarterback hold the ball an extra second. Because if he does, we’re getting home and wrecking the game.”
Deonte Banks and Flott split reps as the starting outside cornerback opposite Paulson Adebo....
