Thankful probably isn’t a word most Giants fans are using this Monday morning, unless it’s to suggest how thankful they are this season — the season of Saquon — is finally, mercifully over.
And if Giants general manager Joe Schoen wants to stop spinning his wheels in trying to close the talent gap between the Giants and the Eagles, which right now is wider than the Grand Canyon, there is one area in particular where Schoen and the Giants really need to start having more success.
The NFL draft.
Three years in, with a 19-33-1 record, including playoffs, the proverbial clock hanging outside the building at 1925 Giants Drive - one those inside refuse to acknowledge - is ticking.
Daboll must deliver on everything that got him to this point in the first place. Give his players reason to believe not just in the process, but in his belief that they can finish games.
The Giants will pair a quarterback in one of the first two rounds with an established veteran. I think the Giants’ starting quarterback this coming Week 1 will be aged 27 or older. Brian Daboll understands the game and also knows that the quickest way toward erasing the ugliness of next season is to find himself a quarterback with some seasoning who can get the ball out on time and on location. What would I do? Use my extra fourth-round draft pick and see if I can pry Jake Browning out of Cincinnati, giving Cam Ward some time to sit in Year 1. Eventually, for Daboll to succeed, he’s going to need the dynamism of a running quarterback.
