An already large injury report grew for the New York Giants during a Sunday loss to the New Orleans Saints at MetLife Stadium.
The team lost several additional players, including cornerback Tre Hawkins, who suffered a fractured lumbar spine. They also lost guard Jon Runyan Jr. to an ankle injury — an injury that is likely to end his season.
“I’d say Runyan is pretty sore today,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters on Monday. “Runyan has an ankle. I’d say week to week, maybe more than week to week.”
With under four weeks remaining in the season, it seems unlikely Runyan would be rushed back to play in meaningless games. If he lands on injured reserve (IR), he’d be ineligible to return anyway, and keeping him on the 53-man roster only shorts the team on game day.
Both Runyan and Hawkins are strong candidates for season-ending IR given their current situations.
Runyan was the team’s top free agent signing this past offseason, having been inked to a three-year deal worth $30 million, including $17 million guaranteed.
The 27-year-old started all 13 games at left guard this year, taking 100 percent of the team’s offensive snaps until leaving the Saints game after 34 snaps (44 percent).
Runyan had earned an overall grade of 56.1 courtesy of Pro Football Focus, which ranked him 89th out of 125 eligible guards.
