The New York Giants fired head coach Brian Daboll on Monday.
New York announced that offensive coordinator and assistant head coach Mike Kafka will finish the season as interim head coach. The Giants dismissed Daboll, a former member of Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots coaching staff, after a Week 10 loss to the Chicago Bears.
The organization also confirmed that Joe Schoen will remain the general manager and spearhead the search for a new head coach.
“We spoke this morning about the direction of our franchise on the field, and we have decided that, at this time, it is in our best interest to make a change at the head coaching position,” president John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch said in a joint statement. “The past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have not met our expectations for this franchise. We understand the frustrations of our fans, and we will work to deliver a significantly improved product.”
The Patriots won five Super Bowls during Daboll’s two stints with the organization. He started as a defensive assistant in 2000 before transitioning to a wide receivers coach from 2002 to 2006.
Daboll worked as the New York Jets’ quarterbacks coach and an offensive coordinator for three different teams (Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs) before returning to Foxborough as a tight ends coach in 2013.
Josh Allen morphed into a superstar quarterback during Daboll’s tenure as the Buffalo Bills’ offensive coordinator. He parlayed that success into his first head coaching job with the Giants.
Daboll triumphantly started that position by coaching them to their first playoff win in 11 years. He was named 2022 Coach of the Year after a 9-7-1 campaign, but the Giants have since gone 11-33.
While Jaxson Dart has given the beleaguered franchise some hope, the Giants are 2-8 with four straight losses after upsetting the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6. Sunday’s 24-20 loss to Chicago marked the fourth time the Giants blew a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter on the road this season.
Kafka will follow Mike McCoy as the next interim head coach to face New England when the Giants play the Patriots in Week 13. Big Blue’s vacancy could be interesting for Pats fans to monitor, as speculation has linked Belichick to the job.
