After such a disappointing 2024 season, the NY Giants face a 2025 offseason with no QBs on the current roster, questions about depth in the trenches on both sides of the ball, and a #3 draft pick that doesn’t allow them an obvious choice right now. It’s way too early to know what the Giants draft board looks like. But just for fun, let’s take a look at some options.
The current top draft prospects vary depending on the draft pundit ranking them. For example, PFF has two-way Heisman Trophy winner, WR/CB Travis Hunter as their overall #1 ranked prospect with DE/Edge Abdul Carter as #2. Yet, their top rated QB, Cam Ward, comes in at #17 prospect. The currently 2nd best QB in this draft, Shedeur Sanders, is ranked as the #43 prospect. That doesn’t give any Giants fan a lot of confidence the QB of the team’s future is in this draft. PFF rankings can be harder than most.
Despite the low confidence in this year’s QB prospects, ESPN’s Mel Kiper has Sanders as his top QB and the #4 prospect in this draft followed by #5 prospect QB Ward. There is consensus that the top two prospects are Hunter and Carter. In Kiper’s first mock draft, he has the Giants taking QB Sanders with the #3 pick.
CBS Sports NFL draft experts have Ward as the top QB in this draft and rank him as the #4 prospect. Ward is viewed as the more mobile QB with a better arm than Sanders.
So, what is the current thinking of GM Joe Schoen and the front office? We won’t have the benefit of a Hard Knocks TV show to see into the Giants front office this offseason. But, just look at the roster now and see the holes that need to be filled. QB, OL, DL, CB appear to be the top needs. Again, the Giants don’t have a QB on the roster right now. Yes, they have exclusive rights to Tommy “Cutlets” DeVito. But, Drew Lock was on a one-year deal. The Giants need to get at least three QBs on the roster, more likely four for the offseason and preseason. Schoen has spent very visible time scouting both Ward and Sanders. The Reese’s Senior Bowl and the Shriners All Star games are coming up. Giants coaches are all over those games to get eyes on the top prospects. These bowls and the 2025 NFL Combine will be more important this year for the Giants than past years.
Depth on the Offensive line and Defensive line are also big issues for the Giants. LT Andrew Thomas has an injury history that cannot be overlooked. When he’s in the lineup, this year’s Oline was performing at a solid level, much better than previous years. When Thomas went down, Jermaine Elumenour had to move from RT to LT and the Oline performance plummeted. John Michael Schmitz struggled again at Center for a second year in a row. Defensively, when...
