Jaxson Dart will not wear his college jersey number as an NFL rookie with the New York Giants. The team recently released its updated roster showing first-year player uniforms following April’s NFL Draft.
The quarterback’s old number is currently owned by a teammate on the defensive side of the ball. Dart asked about making a deal, but the price was too high!
Jaxson Dart played three seasons at Ole Miss after spending his freshman year at USC. He wore No. 2 at both stops. That number grew somewhat synonymous with the signal caller as a senior when he led the SEC in passing and guided the Rebels to a 10-win campaign.
He was drafted by the Giants in the first round of the latest selection process. He was the second passer taken in the event behind first overall choice Cam Ward.
That first-round status helped him secure a lucrative $17 million contract that included a $9 million signing bonus. Dart wasted no time burning through some of that dough by going on a mini-spending spree alongside New York WR Wen’Dale Robinson.
Now, it seems a new teammate was looking for a way to get his hands on some of that cash.
Banks is the player on the Giants roster that currently wears No. 2. He’d previously worn No. 3 but made the switch after the team signed Russell Wilson this offseason.
Salute to my guy & young star Tae Banks! Grateful for you letting me wear #3 King! Full of gratitude @Giants

It’s unclear if Wilson had to pay for the rights to No. 3. Either way, the veteran passer got his wish in the jersey swap. That wasn’t the case for his rookie teammate.
Potentially hesitant to make another jersey number change heading into the NFL season, Banks set a high price when Dart reached out to inquire about buying No. 2.
Everyone has their price, but sometimes it’s too high – even for a first rounder like Jaxson Dart @nflpa | @Fanatics pic.twitter.com/yICvMiFhV0

“Yeah, [I asked about getting the jersey number],” Jaxson Dart said. “It was too much.” He was unwilling to match the ransom demand!
The details of that price are unknown. If deals made by other rookies around the league are any indication, it was likely a six-figure ask.
Instead of keeping his college jersey number, Dart will make his professional debut as No. 6. He can the circle back to grabbing No. 2 at a later date.
