The New York Giants have hired John Harbaugh as the team’s next head coach, and are expected to introduce him at a press conference on Tuesday, but the Giants didn’t make that move without first checking in on the status of former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

According to a report by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Giants were one of several teams to check in with the Steelers about the availability of Tomlin immediately after he stepped down from the team on Tuesday.

Tomlin reiterated to the Giants that he is not interested in coaching in the NFL this season, after which, the Giants moved forward with hiring Harbaugh.

Steelers president Art Rooney II also said that Tomlin did not plan to coach in 2026 and that he felt that Tomlin’s decision had more to do with spending more time with his family than anything else.

“It was probably a family-related decision more than it was a football-related decision,” Rooney said.

Tomlin has not spoken publicly since his resignation. He supported his daughter, Harley, at her Georgia gymnastics meet against LSU on Friday, and they and his wife Kiya Tomlin took in the Georgia vs. Arkansas basketball game on Saturday.

If Tomlin wants to coach again in 2027, the Steelers could be in line to earn some compensation from another team. He would have to work out a trade between the Steelers and another club, since Pittsburgh still has him under contract.
