The New York Giants are benching quarterback Russell Wilson and rookie Jaxson Dart will start in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers, according to multiple reports.

Wilson, 36, is off to one of the worst starts of his 14-year NFL career, completing just 65 of his 110 pass attempts (59.1%) for 778 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions while leading New York to a disappointing 0-3 start to the season.

Wilson getting benched throws a wrench in the Steelers’ compensatory pick formula. According to Nick Korte of Over the Cap, Wilson needed to start the entire season in order for a fourth round pick to materialize for the Steelers. If Wilson plays less than 40% of the snaps this year, his contract could fall all the way to the sixth round. Korte made a case that Wilson needed to be the starter until Week 7 for the Steelers to get a fifth round pick.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll was not willing to guarantee Wilson will be the team’s starter as early as this week.

“We’re working through all personnel decisions and we’ll do that over the next few days,” Daboll said when asked if Wilson will remain the starter moving forward, via ESPN insider Adam Schefter. “We’re going through the tape right now. We’re evaluating everything.”

Wilson, a 14th-year veteran, played 11 games for the Steelers a season ago. He passed for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions before signing with the Giants during the offseason.

Wilson got off to a promising start with Pittsburgh but his play declined drastically down the stretch, as the Steelers lost five straight games to end the season.

Wilson getting benched for rookie Jaxson Dart was expected. The Giants are eager start the Dart era.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported in June, “You listen to everything Brian Daboll says, you get an understanding of how far along Jaxson Dart is, and where you think he’s going to go. It’s clearly a matter of when, not if.”

The Giants traded up to select Dart in the first round at 26, signaling he was always part of their long-term vision.
