Friday afternoon news:
The #Saints plan to meet again with #Eagles OC Kellen Moore after Super Bowl LIX, an indication he’s the top choice for new head coach, per The Insiders.
This is the first time the two sides can speak… and Moore could just stick around, since the game is in New Orleans. pic.twitter.com/PKzt1wX8Cx

#Saints GM Mickey Loomis informed other candidates this morning that, while there has been no final decision, he plans to continue discussions with Kellen Moore. Moore has been working on staff; he can’t be officially hired until after the Super Bowl and another meeting awaits. https://t.co/s7lvV0z1vk

Alright. You’re thinking what I’m thinking. Here we go again with the Shane Steichen and Jonathan Gannon thing from two years ago. Kellen Moore has a Super Bowl to prepare for, yet some crap team needs a head coach, and because the NFL hiring cycle is so dumb we’re once again in this situation where people with jobs are being courted ahead of the most important game of their lives.
We went over this two weeks ago in a Pulitzer-winning column titled The Worst Topic in the History of the World is NFL Coordinators Being Distracted by Head Coach Interviews. To recap, the “coordinator X was distracted” narrative is a black hole because it cannot be proven or disproven. It does not mean that it’s WRONG, because sure, Gannon and now Moore could possibly be unfocused due to the Cardinals’ and Saints’ interest, but short of a lobotomy we can never know for sure. In Gannon’s case, maybe he locks himself in a room and does four million hours of film study to prepare for the Chiefs. Does that guarantee that the Eagles identify and stop Andy Reid’s “corndog” play? What if the Chiefs call a play they’ve never called before, and therefore does not even appear on film? OR – what if the Birds are ready for a play and the Chiefs simply execute it better than the Eagles defend it? There are all sorts of variables in play here.
Regardless, you know exactly what’s going to happen. If the Birds lose the Super Bowl and the offense plays poorly, you will hear all about Kellen Moore being “distracted” by the Saints job. Steel yourselves!
