George Pickens has been a mercurial wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers since being drafted in the 2nd round in 2022. The former Georgia Bulldog has mixed moments and games that show incredible potential with a lot of pouting and poor body langauge that have turned much of Pittsburgh’s fan base off.
The team acquired DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks this offseason to boost their wide receiver corps. That could be alongside Pickens or without Pickens, and recent social media activity has re-intensified speculation that George Pickens could be traded.
Pickens has an impressive 2,841 receiving yards in his first three seasons despite playing in some pretty bad Pittsburgh passing offenses. While he’s not great at the entire route tree, he’s dominant alongside the physicality with his impressive physicality, body awareness, and contested catch ability. But, he’s been fined numerous times by the league for inappropriate behavior on the field, has been routinely seen pouting, and has even taken to social media in the past to complain about the team. He’s about to play out the last year of his rookie deal, meaning that after this upcoming season the Steelers either have to let him walk or pay him big money heading into 2026.
That would make a trade of George Pickens, 24, reasonable. And, it was revealed on Wednesday that he had unfollowed the team on social media, sparking rumors of a potential draft weekend trade. Here’s Pro Football Talk with more.
Steelers wide receiver George Pickens may or may not have a new home at the end of this weekend.
But Pickens is ready if the Steelers trade him: He has unfollowed the team on Instagram.
It is unclear when Pickens stopped following the team account. Alex Kozora of Steelers Depot shared a screenshot from March 9 showing Pickens following the Steelers’ official account, so it’s been sometime in the past six weeks.
Steelers General Manager Omar Khan said Tuesday that the team has no interest in trading Pickens, expressing excitement in pairing Pickens with DK Metcalf.
Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reports while the Steelers aren’t actively shopping Pickens, conversations have taken place.
Plenty of teams, like the Patriots, Jaguars, and Raiders would be interested in Pickens if he does indeed hit the market.
