Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens is once again drawing attention on social media, this time for what many are interpreting as a subtle jab at his former team following a major trade.
After the Steelers dealt veteran safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for cornerback Jalen Ramsey, tight end Jonnu Smith and a seventh-round pick, Pickens took to Instagram with a cryptic story.
“Super happy for you broski !!!!! Back to beautiful places in life lol,” Pickens wrote.
The post quickly fueled speculation that Pickens was referring not only to Fitzpatrick’s trade destination but also to what some perceive as his own frustration with how things ended in Pittsburgh. The message struck many as more than just congratulatory, it felt pointed, even sarcastic.
This type of social media behavior was not uncommon for Pickens during his time in Pittsburgh. Despite showcasing elite physical traits and legitimate playmaking ability, the former second-round pick often found himself at the center of controversy. From sideline outbursts to helmet-throwing displays of frustration, Pickens routinely drew criticism for his emotional responses during games.
Team sources also cited off-field concerns, including reports that he showed up late to at least one game and had a pattern of inconsistent professionalism. While the Steelers publicly supported him early in his tenure, those issues reportedly compounded over time, contributing to his eventual trade to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a third-round pick earlier this offseason.
The arrival of four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers in Pittsburgh may have also factored into the decision. According to some around the team, the organization didn’t want to risk two such high profile personalities clashing.
In Dallas, Pickens is said to be fitting in well so far. Coaches have praised his work ethic in offseason programs, and teammates have responded positively to his presence. However, the true test will come during the regular season. If adversity hits, observers will be watching closely to see whether Pickens has matured or whether the same behavioral patterns that led to his departure from Pittsburgh will once again come to the surface.
