George Pickens was dealt from the Steelers to the Cowboys this offseason ending a three-year NFL run in Pittsburgh. Recent reports suggest not many in the locker room were torn up about the decision.
Pickens’ former teammates were supposedly fed up with his on- and off-field antics. They pushed for a trade despite the team’s inability to get market value for the wideout.
Mark Kaboly of the Kaboly+Mack podcast broke the situation down based on what he’s heard from inside the Steelers building. He listed a series of bullet points surrounding the receiver’s exit.
More on the Steelers trading George Pickens to Dallas:
• Significant locker room guys got fed up with Pickens’ antics and quickly got turned off by him for multiple reasons, I was told.
• Some felt that it would be counterproductive to keep him around, even with his unique… pic.twitter.com/TXgebUYMV6

Kaboly insists that not only were teammates tired of the headaches caused by George Pickens, but they felt it would be “counterproductive” to keep him on the roster. Unfortunately, it seems a number of other NFL franchises were hesitant to seek a trade.
Pickens is a first-round talent that dropped to second-round NFL Draft standing due to attitude problems and an inability to control his emotions. Pittsburgh believed it could keep those concerns in check. It turns out, they couldn’t.
The Steelers received a third-round draft pick to deal the pass catcher to Dallas. They were one of the few trade partners that didn’t laugh at Pittsburgh’s attempts to offload Pickens.
It put the team in a difficult position. Nobody wanted to give up a top pick for George Pickens. His Pittsburgh teammates didn’t want him back. Rather than create a locker room rift, they got what they could.
A photo of a response to an online video circulated social media on Sunday. The picture shows Pickens supposedly reacting to a clip of two former teammates discussing the trade.
The reply called the Steelers the “cheapest organization” in the NFL, which would be a justified response from Pickens’ perspective given the team’s decision to let him walk for less than market value.
The note went viral on the internet. Pickens denied posting the response after the fact.
Literally on a plane. No service. Just landed and seen straight LIES from Pitt fans. Stop with the AI trying to make a story. I’m happy for everything the Steel City did for me.

Pickens says he didn’t shade the Steelers. He’s appreciative of his time with Pittsburgh. His history of causing distractions have many doubting his denial.
Either way, the receiver is no longer the Steelers’ responsibility. It will be interesting to see how he transitions to Dallas.
