The New York Jets suffered another embarrassing defeat, this time 42-10 at the hands of the New England Patriots. Their passing attack, once again led by quarterback Brady Cook, continued to falter.
The loss itself will sting, but the Jets were already far out of the playoff hunt. What is worse, is that Garrett Wilson is still their leading receiver after Week 17, via Football Perspective. Wilson hasn’t played since October. 12, back in Week 10.
Against the Patriots, John Metchie led the way with three catches for 41 yards. That moved him into the fifth spot on the team for yardage with 236. Sitting at No. 1 though, somehow someway, remains Wilson with 395. He’s followed by tight end Mason Taylor (369) and running back Breece Hall (350).
When healthy, Wilson is one of the strongest receivers in the NFL. However, it has been seven weeks since he last played. Furthermore, injuries have held him to just seven games overall. Still, Wilson leads the Jets with 36 receptions and four touchdowns alongside his yardage.
While it’s a feather in Wilson’s cap, it is also a testament to New York’s current offense. Quarterback has been a clear problem, going from Justin Fields to Tyrod Taylor to Cook. It’d be hard for anyone to thrive with so much change. But alongside quarterback, the Jets have struggled to find a true compliment in the pass game for Wilson.
Once their QB situation is settled, New York will begin thinking how to make their offense stronger. It’s likely that Wilson will led the Jets in receiving yards often. But if he’s out with injury, New York needs another pass catcher who can shine.
