The Kansas City Chiefs were hit with troubling off-field news Sunday night after offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s wife, Mia Bieniemy, was reportedly shot at the couple’s home in Ashburn, Virginia, according to ESPN’s Nate Taylor.
Sources say Mia Bieniemy, 57, was rushed to a local hospital and remains under treatment. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that one person suffered “serious injuries” in the incident but did not publicly identify the victim.
According to Arye Pulli on X, Eric Bieniemy’s son, Elijah Bieniemy, has been charged with three felony counts: use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, malicious wounding, and discharging a firearm within a building. He was arraigned early Monday morning and, if convicted on all three charges, faces between 10 and 33 years in prison. Public court records show Elijah remains in custody, with a preliminary hearing set for Aug. 31.
The shocking incident unfolded just hours after Eric was on the practice field with the Chiefs during the team’s second training camp session at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri. According to Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Leah Pau, deputies responded to a shooting at a home on the 20000 block of Northpark Drive in Ashburn, Virginia, at 7:32 p.m. ET on Sunday.
Bieniemy has been one of the NFL’s most respected offensive minds for years. Although he’s been coaching since 2000, he became a household name during his first stint as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022, helping power Kansas City’s high-octane offense and multiple Super Bowl runs.
After repeatedly coming up short in the head-coaching cycle, Bieniemy left Kansas City for Washington in 2023. His stint with the Commanders lasted just one season before the new coaching staff moved in a different direction. Following the 2025 season, the Chiefs parted ways with Matt Nagy and reunited with Bieniemy, bringing him back to lead the offense once again.
The Chiefs acknowledged the situation in a brief statement, saying they are “aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family,” but declined to comment further. Eric has since left the Chiefs’ facility to go back home and provide support for his wife.
