Who can Packers GM Brian Gutekunst target this spring to make a splash in free agency?
The Green Bay Packers’ 2024 season has been over for a couple of weeks now, which means it’s time for months and months of hot takes! Rumors! Hirings! Our sweet baby Jordan Love’s wedding! What on earth do we discuss while we wait for the 2025 season to begin? FREE AGENCY!
As we’ve seen in past seasons, GM Brian Gutekunst is no stranger to making moves during free agency, despite what fans online will tell you. Notable FA signings during Gutekunst’s tenure include Marcedes Lewis, Preston Smith, the other Smith, Adrian Amos, De’Vondre Campbell, Keisean Nixon, and more. Remember Sammy Watkins and Devin Funchess? I sure wish I didn’t!
Let us take a quick look at one free agent from every single NFL team, starting with the AFC East, who I think could be a fit in Green Bay. Disclaimer, in case there are people who think I want every single one of these guys on the Packers: I don’t. Let me have fun.
I stand by the Packers’ decision to trade Rasul Douglas to the Buffalo Bills during the 2023 season. At the time, the Packers were 2-5 and the vibes were plummeting. They could get a somewhat-valuable asset for Douglas, while also sending him to a team where he still had the opportunity to win. Hindsight is always 20/20. Who could’ve predicted the random midseason transformation from the Packers? Suddenly, their Super Bowl window was wide open. It’s still open, and it’s time to for Rasul to climb back through it.
Douglas is one of the few FAs throughout this series who I would actually like to see in Green Bay. It’s become apparent that CB is a major need in this Packers secondary, and that’s with Jaire Alexander on the roster. Alexander could very well be cut or traded this calendar year, and we’d be left with Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine, plus whichever rookies they inevitably draft in April. Douglas will be 31 when the 2025 season begins, and he’s still got some gas left in the tank (there’s no need to look at his stats from this season, trust me!!) His experience, plus his familiarity with a ton of the guys in the locker room, would be invaluable to the Packers as they figure out what their DB room looks like moving forward.
LB being of need for the Packers couldn’t come at a worse time, with the 2025 free agency class being extremely underwhelming at the position. The Dolphins have a ton of free agents hitting the market this offseason, and Dodson is probably one of their best. Guess what, he’s also a perfect fit for the Packers (derogatory; he’s no stranger to giving up splash plays in the run game). Dodson finished the season with 107 tackles, 2 sacks, and 3 INTs in his time...
