CLAIRTON, Pa. — Veteran wide receiver and local legend Tyler Boyd seems more than open to a homecoming with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Speaking after his eighth annual youth football camp on Saturday, held at the newly renamed Tyler Boyd Stadium in Clairton, Boyd made it clear a return to Pittsburgh would mean more than just football.
“Absolutely,” Boyd said. “You know, all my family is here. I’d be able to have the majority of them be able to support me.”
A reunion makes sense on several levels. The 30-year-old wideout is still capable of contributing. In 2024, he hauled in 39 passes for 390 yards with the Tennessee Titans. Before that, he spent eight standout seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he posted multiple 1,000 yard campaigns and caught 513 passes, fifth most in franchise history.
Now a free agent, Boyd could provide the Steelers with something they clearly lack behind D.K. Metcalf: a steady, reliable veteran presence in the receiver room. But this isn’t just about production. It’s about Pittsburgh roots.
Boyd is nothing short of royalty in Western Pennsylvania. A native of Clairton, he helped transform the school into a high school football powerhouse, leading the team to a 63 and 1 record during his career. He set the all time WPIAL record with 117 total touchdowns. From there, he stayed home, starring at Pitt and finishing with 5,243 all purpose yards, second only to Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett in school history.
Even now, Boyd remains a fixture in the community that raised him, running youth camps and giving back year after year. That connection, along with his ties to Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, only strengthens the case.
“I’m real cool with Tomlin,” Boyd said. “He’s always been a good person. We always wrapped it up. When I was at Pitt, we had a good relationship.”
Boyd and the Steelers reportedly had contact talks last offseason, before he signed a one-year deal with the Titans.
As training camp draws near and the Steelers still face questions about their receiver depth, it’s hard to ignore the hometown hero still available on the market, especially for a team looking to maximize what could be a final run with future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers under center.
