The Pittsburgh Steelers hosted free agent wide receiver Gabe Davis on Thursday, but it’s expected that he’ll leave the team’s facility without signing a contract, confirmed by Steelers Now. Chris Halicke of DKPittsburghSports was the first to report.
Davis totaled 20 receptions for 239 yards and two touchdowns through 10 games in Jacksonville last season. He missed half of the go-round because of a minor knee surgery, and the Jaguars released Davis after a failed physical.
Davis also had visits with the San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants this offseason.
Before inking a three-year, $39 million free-agent deal with Jacksonville last offseason, Davis was a reliable target for Josh Allen in Buffalo. Over four seasons with the Bills, he pulled in 163 passes for 2,700 yards and 27 touchdowns. Davis had a knack for creating big plays in Buffalo.
In 2022, Steelers fans watched Davis grab six passes for 171 yards and a pair of touchdowns, spoiling Kenny Pickett’s debut as Pittsburgh’s starter. Davis had a career-long 98-yard score in the 38-3 Bills victory.
Davis’ eruption in a playoff game against Kansas City that same season would be remembered more fondly had the Chiefs not stolen the win late. Davis registered eight catches for 201 yards and four touchdowns in the 42-36 defeat, including a go-ahead grab with 13 seconds left.
Davis would join a Steelers’ receiver room that features DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, Brandon Johnson, Scotty Miller, Ben Skowronek, Robert Woods, Roc Taylor, Lance McCutcheon, and Ke’Shawn Williams.
“Everybody kinda know what type of player he is,” Steelers running back Kenneth Gainwell said of Davis at OTAs on Tuesday. “We’ve seen him with Buffalo against Kansas City, four touchdowns in one game. The type of attitude he brings towards the game, and I’d say, man, he’s just a baller, he’s a player to the game just like I am, and he feeds off of energy, so the energy’s high, and he ready to ball, he sees the team winning — that’s the type of guy we need in the building.”
Alan Saunders and Brendan Howe contributed reporting for this story.
