All signs point to Aaron Rodgers eventually signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers. But if that doesn’t come to fruition, Kirk Cousins could be a fallback option for the Black and Gold.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said the Steelers have Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins on their radar and would at least look into trading for the veteran QB.
“So Rodgers Plan A, Kirk Cousins could be a viable Plan B,” Fowler said on SportsCenter. “After making some calls today, I do believe he’s been on their radar. If something were to fall through with Rodgers, certainly they could reconvene, call Atlanta, and see if they could shake something out. But right now, Rodgers is their guy.”
Adam Schefter of ESPN said in April the Falcons would consider trading Cousins if the right deal is on the table.
“Publicly, the Falcons have said they’re not interested in trading quarterback Kirk Cousins but that they’d entertain offers if the right deal was on the table,” Schefter wrote. “Atlanta has asked for any acquiring team to pay $20 million of the $45 million worth of guarantees left on Cousins’ contract. To date, no has been willing to do that, and no team is expected to be willing to. But what happens this weekend — and which franchises come out of the draft with or without rookie quarterbacks –could influence how much guaranteed money a team might be willing to absorb on Cousins’ contract.”
Rodgers dropped a major hint he’s going to sign with the Steelers.
During a concert last Saturday in Austin, Texas with his friend and artist, Mike Stud, Rodgers held a Q&A with the crowd.
At one point during the session, a girl asked him if he would ever play for the Chicago Bears. Rodgers replied, “No. But I believe there is a team that might play in Chicago this year, a road trip to Chicago. I love Chicago, though, way more than they love me. It’s been a great relationship all one way.”
The Steelers play the Bears in Week 12 at Soldier Field. The Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints also both play at Chicago this season, but they’re not considered clear-cut favorites to land Rodgers like the Steelers.
Rodgers was later asked if he would sign with the Steelers, and he gave a rather ambiguous answer.
“You never know,” Rodgers said.
