Four former members of the Pittsburgh Steelers are now UFL champions as the Louisville Kings won Saturday’s United Bowl III at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.
The Kings, an expansion franchise in their first season of existence, played a road game at the predetermined, supposedly neutral site, but defeated the DC Defenders, 27-20 thanks to a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown runs.
Former Steelers wide receiver Tarik Black, offensive lineman Kellen Diesch, safety Quindell Johnson all played in the game for the Kings, with Black starting at wide receiver and the other two players appearing as reserves. Additionally, former Steelers safety and Wilkinsburg native Kenny Robinson was on the Louisville injured reserve list.
Black caught one of four targets — a 40-yard reception that set up a Louisville field goal in the third quarter. Phelps had two tackles, one on defense and one on special teams.
Black was signed just after the start of training camp by the Steelers in 2024, and he was waived with an injury designation later that preseason. He spent time with the Miami Dolphins in 2025.
The Defenders led, 16-7 at the half. After Louisville kicker Tanner Brown booted a pair of third-quarter field goals, the DC lead was cut to 16-13 heading into the final frame.
That’s when Louisville running back Ian Wheeler ripped off a 44-yard touchdown run to put the Kings in the lead. Wheeler finished with 86 yards on 10 carries and won MVP honors. James Robinson added another fourth-quarter score before Washington managed a final field goal.
There were several former Steelers on the losing end of the title game, as well. Running back Xazavian Valladay, wide receiver Cornell Powell, offensive lineman Tykeem Doss and kicker Matt McCrane were all on the DC squad.
McCrane made three field goals and an extra point. Valladay had a 51-yard touchdown in the second quarter and finished with a game-high 111 yards on four carries. He also caught one pass for one yard. Powell had three catches for 40 yards to lead DC.
UFL players are free to sign with NFL teams now that the season is complete, and several could be added to the Steelers and other rosters between now and the start of training camp.
