The Washington Commanders are currently experiencing success like they haven’t seen in decades. After winning the Super Bowl in 1991, Washington failed to win more than 10 games for the next 32 years and never advanced past the Divisional Round of the NFC playoffs.
Now it appears they’ve turned the corner, and it comes in just the second season after former owner Dan Snyder was forced to sell the team after several instances of mistreatment and sexual harassment of team employees. Now all Snyder can do is watch as the team he once owned becomes the belle of the ball in the NFL. And he’s not very happy about.
“He f—ing hates it,” a companion of Snyder’s recently said of the team’s success according to ESPN.
So, how is Snyder coping without his precious football team? In short, poorly.
Snyder is reportedly exploring buying a stake in a Premier League soccer team. But the same source told ESPN that he only ever really wanted to own the Commanders, his childhood team.
“He isn’t a fan of other sports,” the source said. “He’s a fan of the [Commanders]. That was the biggest thing … For him, it wasn’t somebody losing a team. This was different. He loved that team.”
Ultimately, sometimes if you love something you have to let it go. That’s particularly true of Snyder, who literally had to the let the Commanders go after being forced out by the league. Some may pin Washington’s newfound success to karma. There may well be an element of that involved. But ultimately, Snyder was just really bad at running a football team on top of his questionable ethics. What we’re seeing now in Washington is simply the result of competent human beings being put in positions to success.
