Bobby Slowik is a name to watch for a future Cowboys staff.
As we await news on who the next Dallas Cowboys head coach will be, reports surfaced today that the Cowboys are currently working on assembling a staff for Brian Schottenheimer, who many predict will be named the Cowboys new head coach.
With all signs currently pointing to Schottenheimer getting the nod at head coach, the next order of business is finding coordinators and position coaches to maximize the Cowboys roster in 2025. While we have heard whispers about Leslie Frazier, Robert Saleh, and a few others being names thrown around as potential defensive coordinator hires, the offensive coordinator position has been quiet.
Reports surfaced earlier this week that Schottenheimer would like to call plays if given the head coaching job, but with zero head coaching experience, that seems like a big responsibility to throw on his plate as a first-time head coach.
It was announced Friday that the Houston Texans have moved on from offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, leaving him available for the Cowboys to interview for the vacant offensive coordinator role. Slowik, 37, was one of the hottest head coaching candidates in last year’s cycle after leading the Texans and rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud to the playoffs in his first year with DeMeco Ryans.
In 2023, the Texans were ranked 15th in EPA/play and 24th in success rate. While those numbers do not jump off the paper, the Texans have struggled to find consistent offensive line play over the last two years. Those numbers dropped in 2024, with a rough showing from the Houston offensive line again, another Tank Dell season ending injury, and Stefon Diggs tearing his ACL. Along with those injuries, Stroud showed signs of regression after an impressive rookie campaign. In 2024, the Texas offense ranked 21st in EPA/play and 31st in success rate.
The Texans had a disappointing year offensively this season, but still managed to make the playoffs and winning their first playoff game against the Los Angeles Chargers. While shine has surely worn off on Slowik as one of the league’s best, young, play-callers, he’s still a very intriguing option available for the Cowboys, who got a late start into the hiring process. Even with the 2024 regression, Slowik still proved to find ways to win on offense and had stretches where he had the Texans offense humming like it was in 2023.
Brian Schottenheimer and Bobby Slowik have not crossed paths in their NFL coaching career, but with fan apathy seeming to be at an all-time high, is this a hire that could excite the Cowboys fan base, after a rather depressing start to the 2025 offseason?
We will have to find out, but the track record and Kyle Shannahan coaching tree aspect of it all is very intriguing, and could also give the Cowboys a very solid in-house option at head coach down the road if things take a turn for the worst with Schottenheimer, assuming he is named...
