Jon Gruden has admitted that he’s desperate to return to coaching. However, he’s not so keen on going back to the NFL.

Gruden has coached just about everywhere over the span of his near-40-year career, but he has never been in charge of an SEC program, although he was a graduate assistant at Tennessee from 1986-1987.

The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders head coach recently spoke to Georgia players, having visited the Bulldogs during the offseason. In a video posted to his official YouTube channel, Gruden expressed his desire to become a coach again.

“The only reason I really came here is because I want to coach again,” he said. “I’m being honest with you. I do not bullsh** either. I want to coach again.”

Gruden went on to say how much he wants to coach in the SEC, claiming he’d die to do so.

“I’d die to coach in the SEC. I would love it. I would f***ing love it. I’ll let you guys this… what I know about the SEC is it’s getting harder,” he remarked. “The SEC is getting harder. They tell me Texas is in the SEC. They tell me Oklahoma is in the SEC. G**damn.”

Jon Gruden Has Been Out Of The College Game For Over 30 Years

Jon Gruden last worked as a consultant with the New Orleans Saints in 2023, having resigned as the head coach of the Raiders after emails bearing racially/misogynistic/homophobic language leaked while the NFL was investigating former Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder in 2021.

Gruden had coached the Raiders for eight seasons and the Buccaneers for seven seasons before that, leading the latter to a Super Bowl.

He hasn’t coached in college since he was a wide receivers coach at Pittsburgh in 1991, having joined the Green Bay Packers as an offensive assistant/quality control coach a year later.

It appears he has the itch to return.
