Behind the Steel Curtain
The mere mention of the name Matt Canada is enough to fill Pittsburgh Steelers fans with rage, angst, and PTSD.
Canada was the Steelers’ offensive coordinator from 2021-23, a span in which the Steelers were one of the worst offenses in the NFL.
From 2022-23, the Steelers scored 30 points just once and failed to reach 400 total yards in 58 consecutive game – a streak that was snapped in the team’s first game after Canada’s firing.
It’s not only fans that grew tired of Canada, but players as well. One of those players was wide receiver Calvin Austin.
In a recent Instagram post portraying a faux documentary about Steelers fans surviving Matt Canada, Austin left a comment that made his feelings very clear.
“Just let me know when my segment is,” Austin said with two laughing emojis.
Austin was selected by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but missed his rookie campaign due to injury. He caught just 15 passes with Canada as his offensive coordinator. He caught 36 and 31 passes in 2024 and 2025, respectively. The Memphis product signed a one-year deal with the New York Giants this offseason.
