The Chicago Bears are aiming to finish a deal to make former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antwaan Randle El their new assistant head coach/wide receiver coach, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday night.

Randle El played for the Steelers from 2002-05, then again in 2010 after a four-year layover with Washington. In relocating to the Windy City, Randle El would be following new Bears head coach Ben Johnson, who served as the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator from 2022 through this season. The Washington Commanders recently bounced Detroit from the NFL playoffs.

For the past four seasons, Randle El’s has been the Lions’ wide receivers coach. He joined Detroit in 2021 after two campaigns as an offensive assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Randle El was part of a Super Bowl-winning coaching staff with the Buccaneers, who were at the time boosted by Tom Brady.

Randle El has contributed to the careers of standout receivers such as Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Mike Evans, and Chris Godwin.

A second-round Steelers draft pick in 2002, Randle El totaled 184 receptions for 2,265 yards and seven touchdowns in Pittsburgh. He was a quarterback in college at Indiana and left for the professional level as the FBS’ all-time leading rusher at that position. The Big 10’s Freshman of the Year Award is named after him.

Randle El’s most notable play with the Steelers was his 43-yard touchdown pass to Hines Ward during Super Bowl XL. The trick play is one of the most memorable plays in Super Bowl history, and one of the most cherished by Steelers fans during that magical run.
