A former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver is staying in the NFC.
The New York Giants have re-signed former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Gunner Olszewski, the team announced.
Olszewski, 28, first joined the Giants in 2023 after the Steelers released him shortly before their Week 7 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
The Steelers signed Olszewski to a two-year contract in 2022 with the intention of him replacing Ray-Ray McCloud as a slot receiver and return man. However, he lost his punt return job to Steven Sims and only kept his receiving role because the team traded away Chase Claypool.
Olszewski did deal with some injuries during his tenure in Pittsburgh, but he did not play well when given an opportunity, either.
In 18 games with the Steelers, Olszewski caught six passes for 53 yards, ran eight times for 39 yards, returned nine punts for 63 yards and returned two kickoffs for 24 yards. He also had four total fumbles.
The beginning of Olszewski’s NFL career is a different story, though. He signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent in the 2019 NFL Draft and found his way onto the roster as a special teams contributor.
In 2020, Olszewski led the NFL in punt return yards and was named first-team All-Pro. Then in 2021, he ranked second in punt return yards, with 248 yards on 18 returns through nine games.
However, Olszewski was never the same after leaving New England and that has remained the case in New York, even after receiving a couple of new deals.
He has recorded 15 receptions for 180 yards and one touchdown in his six-year NFL career.
