Former Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad safety Sebastian Castro, a training camp fan favorite, is available again. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released him on Saturday after he spent over a month and played in one game for the team.
“To make room for Luke Goedeke’s return to the 53-man roster, the Bucs are waiving safety Sebastian Castro, who had played on special teams after being signed off the Steelers’ practice squad,” Fox Sports Buccaneers reporter Greg Auman wrote Saturday afternoon on X.
The Buccaneers signed Castro, who was tabbed as the No. 183 overall prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft, according to NFL Mock Draft Database. However, Castro went undrafted and inked a deal with the Steelers for a $25,000 bonus.
“For someone who thinks they’re going to get drafted and then don’t end up getting drafted, it’s like a shot to the heart. It definitely adds motivation,” Castro said at OTAs. “That’s part of the game, though. That’s why I love this game. You’re never going to win every single day and you’re never going to be perfect.”
Castro played both safety positions for the Steelers during the spring and summer. It looked as if he could make the team as depth behind starters DeShon Elliott and Juan Thornhill, but Castro slid to the practice squad after the Steelers’ final cuts in August.
Veteran Jalen Ramsey has slotted in at safety after Elliott suffered a badly hyperextended knee against the Green Bay Packers. The Steelers have also added Jabrill Peppers and Kyle Dugger during the course of the season.
Castro played six special teams snaps for Tampa Bay, making one solo tackle in the Buccaneers’ matchup with the San Francisco 49ers last month.
