Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Daijun Edwards has been released by the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL after reportedly arriving in Montreal out of shape.
Edwards was released by the Alouettes on Tuesday, two days after reporting to the club’s training camp in Saint-Jérôme, Quebec. According to a report by Eric Leblanc of RDS, Edwards was cut because he showed up overweight.
According to Leblanc, Edwards was so out of shape the Alouettes brass wondered if there was another player named Daijun Edwards that they had mistakenly acquired instead of the former Steelers and Georgia running back.
Edwards signed with the Alouettes back in February, so it’s not as if he didn’t have time to prepare for the CFL season. Edwards was listed as 5-foot-10 and 202 pounds during his time with the Steelers.
Edwards first signed with the Steelers after going undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft. In three preseason games last year, Edwards finished with seven carries for 37 yards. His 5.3 yards per carry average was second among the team’s running backs. He also caught one pass — his only target — for nine yards. Edwards played in a total of 17 offensive snaps, and also six special teams snaps, rotating into the backup kickoff return and second-team punt return units. He returned one kickoff for 27 yards.
He was released by the Steelers at the end of training camp and did not sign on with another team throughout the 2024 season.
Edwards shared carries with other backs throughout his time at Georgia, earning a career high of 164 carries for 881 yards as a senior in 2023. He scored 13 touchdowns for the Bulldogs on their way to an Orange Bowl title.
Edwards is not the only former Steelers player that was released by a Canadian team this week. Fellow former Pittsburgh running back Qadree Ollison was cut by the BC Lions and ex-Steelers cornerback Kalon Barnes was released by the Edmonton Elks on Wednesday.
The 2025 CFL season will start on June 5, with the 112th edition of the Grey Cup in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Nov. 16.
