Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson gave his honest take on his football future.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson has been demoted for the second time with the New York Giants, but his confidence in being a starting quarterback in the NFL has not wavered.

The 36-year-old was recently asked about his football future and he showed no signs of wanting to hang up his cleats anytime soon.

“Yeah, I definitely want to be able to (start again). I know what I’m capable of,” Wilson said via SNYGiants. “I know what I’ve done. I know a couple games here and there haven’t gone our way, but I’m just excited about the next opportunity to step between the white lines, and that’s how I’ve always been. I’m not gonna stop swinging. That’s just what I know.”

Russell Wilson was asked about his future in the NFL:

"My favorite scripture is Matthew 6:33. It's my life philosophy, I would say. Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added on to you. Verse 34 says don't worry about tomorrow,… pic.twitter.com/ZEb1JPMB95

Wilson joined the Giants on a one-year, $10.5 million contract this offseason after spending the 2024 season with the Steelers.

He started off hot in Pittsburgh, helping the team win six of his first seven games as a starter, but things took a turn as he struggled down the stretch, losing five straight games to end the season.

Those struggles continued in New York, too. In his limited playing time, Wilson has completed just 69 of his 119 passes (58%) for 831 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

While Wilson’s second demotion of the season doesn’t impact the Steelers’ success this season, it could for future seasons. Pittsburgh is likely paying close attention to Wilson’s playing time as it will directly effect its 2026 NFL Draft compensatory pick formula.

With Wilson’s playing time percentage plummeting while he sits on the bench, the Steelers’ projected return is also dropping.

According to Over the Cap, Wilson had initially been projected to net a fifth-round pick in return. That has now likely fallen to a sixth-round return or worse, though.

Pittsburgh will now have to hope for Giants backup quarterback Jameis Winston to struggle so that Wilson can earn back the role. Then, maybe, Wilson will have the chance to see playing time once again. At least, Wilson seems confident that will happen.

A third-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks, Wilson has thrown for 46,966 yards, 353 touchdowns and 114 interceptions in his professional career.
